Patricia Hutchinson Obituary

Patricia Ann Harris Hutchinson went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 27, 2020 at the age of 86. Pat was an exceptionally loving and caring mother, grandmother, wife, sister, aunt and cousin. She will be remembered for her bubbly personality, her kind heart, and a radiant smile that would light up a room.

Born during the Great Depression in Gastonia, NC on December 9, 1933 to Hiram Gordon Harris and Margaret Jane DeLoach, Pat was the youngest of 10 children. She graduated from Gastonia High School in 1950 and attended West Liberty State College in Wheeling, WV. There she received a degree in Dental Hygiene in 1952 and started her career in Richmond, VA.

Pat later moved to Charlotte, where she met the love of her life, Fred Knox Hutchinson. They married in 1965 and, a few years after starting a family, moved to Mount Holly where they could enjoy an idyllic life on Mountain Island Lake. Pat worked part time as a dental hygienist while she raised her family. She thrived at her profession, doted lovingly on her family, and faithfully attended her handpicked church, Good Shepherd Lutheran in downtown Mount Holly.

Pat possessed a deep and strong faith, selflessly demonstrating it in the many ways that she helped others. Graced with an angelic voice, Pat was a decades-long stalwart of the choir at Good Shepherd Lutheran, an avid Sunday school teacher and a dedicated volunteer in numerous roles. For many years, she volunteered as a Girl Scout troop leader and served in the PTA at her children’s schools. She also worked to protect the land, environment and water supply at Mountain Island Lake to ensure future generations could enjoy it as much as she did.

Despite Alzheimer’s robbing her memory for most of the last decade, her family took joyous delight from her pinpoint recall of her favorite Christmas hymns and tunes and was certain that Pat was able to dream fondly of her weekly square-dancing outings with her beloved Fred.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Fred Knox Hutchinson; her children: Fredrick Joseph Hutchinson (Kim), Jane Rebecca Hutchinson-Barefoot (Bill) and Ann Elizabeth Hutchinson DeStaercke (Gildas); seven grandchildren: Elwin, Nora and June Hutchinson; Olivia Rae and Lily Barefoot; and Chloe and Gabin DeStaercke; sisters Josephine White and Mildred Dover; sister-in-law MaryJo Hutchinson and many nieces and nephews. She loved her family very much and will be missed by all. Given the current unprecedented times we live in, the family will have a private service and burial on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery in Charlotte.
