Charlotte, North Carolina - Carl Wayne Harkey, 76, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. He was born in Lincoln County, son of the late Louise Johnson and Brody Harkey. He was preceded in death by his son Greg Harkey; his eldest brother W.C. Harkey; and his younger brother Lanny Harkey.
Wayne was the owner and operator of Gear Train Inc., a transmission differential company located in Charlotte. Wayne was a member of the Mount Holly Masonic Lodge #544.  He also was an Oasis Shriner. Wayne was a loyal friend to many and even after retirement, continued to visit Gear Train every work day. When he wasn't at Gear Train, he was likely working on classic cars in his garage.
Wayne wasn't always keeping himself busy tinkering on cars, though. When he wanted to relax, he loved sitting in his recliner and enjoying a good Western. It didn't matter what Western, he loved them all. What Wayne loved most though, was his family. He spent a lot of time with his family - not only at "the shop" but on nights and weekends, too. He was always there, as his family would say.
Wayne had a fun-hearted spirit about life and didn't take things too seriously. He liked to have a good time and could get along with anyone, especially the nurses who took care of him later in life.
He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him. He is survived by his son Chandler Harkey of Charlotte, sister Wanda Luckey of Denver, grandchildren Mackenzie Harkey and Brody Harkey, and daughter in law Tracy Harkey.
A visitation will be held from 11:00-12:00pm Saturday April 23 , 2022 at Castanea Community Church. A graveside service will follow at 12:30pmat Webbs Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery
