Doris Jean Hoover Skidmore, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, went to be with her Heavenly Father on December 12, 2024, at McLeod Seacoast Medical Center in Little River, South Carolina. Doris was born on October 24, 1932, to the late TR ‘Reuben’ Hoover and Ida Elizabeth Mauney Hoover in Stanley, North Carolina. She lived a vibrant and fulfilling life, touching the hearts of everyone she met before leaving us at the age of 92.
Doris was a proud graduate of Stanley High School, Class of 1951, and furthered her education at Evans Business College. She dedicated her career to public service, retiring from the Gaston County Clerk of Courts in Gastonia, North Carolina, where she spent her entire professional life. Her work was marked by her commitment and care for the community she served.
Throughout her life, Doris was known for her outgoing personality and her ability to never meet a stranger. Her warmth and kindness attracted many friends, and her legacy of love extends beyond her family to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, William Riley Skidmore, her dear son, Michael Skidmore, and her cherished grandson, Ryan Skidmore. She was also preceded by her siblings Jack Hoover, Henry Hoover, and infant sister Gloria Ruth Hoover.
She is survived by her loving son, Steve Skidmore, her grandson, Stephen Skidmore and his wife Janine, her granddaughter, Lauren Skidmore Radford and her husband Tyler, and her four treasured great-grandchildren, Rosalyn, Bevin, Suzannah, and Shepherd. Additionally, Doris is survived by her sister, Linda H. Sigmon and her husband Mitchell, her sister-in-law, Betty L. Hoover, and her nephews Bruce, Mark, and David Hoover, as well as Matthew Sigmon.
Doris had a passion for life that was reflected in her interests and hobbies. An avid fan of high school, college, and professional football, she passionately supported the Stanley Blue Devils, the South Carolina Gamecocks, and the Carolina Panthers. She loved spending time with her family and friends, often enjoying sunny days at the beach in her beloved community of North Myrtle Beach and Little River, SC. Doris found joy in playing cards with her friends, dining at the countless restaurants along the Grand Strand, and attending shows at the Greg Rowles Legacy Theater.
A lifelong member of Christ’s Lutheran Church in Stanley, Doris's faith was a fundamental part of her life, providing her with strength and guidance. Her spirit will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her.
A funeral service to celebrate Doris's life will be held on Thursday December 19, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Christ's Lutheran Church in Stanley. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
