Elizabeth “Libby” Mitchum McFee Obituary

In the gentle embrace of eternity, Elizabeth “Libby” Mitchum McFee, aged 68, was called home to the Lord on Monday, December 22, 2025. Born in Gaston County to the late Bobby Dean and Sarah Rebekah “Becky” Mitchum, Libby lived a life rich with melody, kindness, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear.

A faithful member of First Methodist Church in Mount Holly, Libby found profound joy in lifting her voice in the choir and serving as an usher, where her warm smile welcomed all who entered. Her spirit, ever vibrant and compassionate, touched countless lives through her selfless contributions to her community.

Libby leaves behind a legacy of love cherished by her devoted son, Robert “Rob” Smith and his wife Rachel; her beloved sister, Lori Mitchum Steward and husband Bob; her adored grand-dog, Cowboy; and her special cousins, Paula Chapman and husband Van, along with their sweet daughter Anna. In their hearts, her memory will forever bloom like the gardens she so cherished.

For over four decades, Libby graced the classrooms of the Gaston County School System as a dedicated teacher, instilling knowledge and inspiration in generations of young minds. She took immense pride in her profession, forever grateful to the mentors who guided her path. Beyond the schoolhouse, she was a proud former member of the Mount Holly Rotary and served with heartfelt commitment as a Guardian ad Litem, advocating for the vulnerable with quiet strength. An ardent lover of the outdoors, Libby found solace and wonder in nature’s beauty—whether strolling sun-dappled trails or simply breathing in the fresh air that mirrored her free-spirited soul.

A celebration of Libby’s extraordinary life will be held 4:00pm Friday January 9, 2026 at First Methodist Church in Mount Holly. The family will have a visitation one hour prior at the church inviting all who knew her to gather in remembrance of her enduring light.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to First Methodist Church, 140 N. Main Street, Mount Holly, NC 28120, where her faith found its deepest expression.
