Fred Knox Hutchinson, 91, passed away on Thursday, January 26th, 2023, in Durham, NC. He was born in Rockingham, NC on October 8, 1931, to the late Armon Elwyn Hutchinson and Mary Rebecca Knox Hutchinson.
After graduating from Rockingham High School in 1950, Fred received a Commercial Art Certification from the Richmond Professional Institute (now VCU) in 1953. Soon thereafter, he enlisted in the US Army where he served at the Army Intelligence Center in Baltimore, Maryland until 1955. Following his time in the service, Fred enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill and graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He eventually settled in Charlotte and began his career as a commercial artist in 1962 with the Package Products Company, Inc. (now Engraph, Inc.) and remained a loyal employee until his retirement in 1997.
On January 23, 1965, Fred married his life partner, Patricia Ann Harris. They had three children and moved to nearby Mount Holly to raise them on beautiful Mountain Island Lake. He was a dedicated member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Mount Holly, where he served in several capacities and offered his artistic skills. Fred was a gentle man with a kind heart and a wonderful sense of humor, who loved his family and his church very much. In his free time, Fred enjoyed sailing on Mountain Island Lake, painting, visiting art museums, gardening and being outdoors.
Fred was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Patricia Harris Hutchinson, and his brother, Robert Hutchinson Sr. (Mary Joanna). He leaves behind his children: son Fredrick Hutchinson of Holly Springs, former daughter-in-law Kim and grandchildren Elwin, Nora, and June; daughter Jane Hutchinson-Barefoot (Bill) of Durham and grandchildren Olivia Rae and Lily; and daughter Ann DeStaercke (Gildas) of Manzat, France and grandchildren Chloe and Gabin. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Mary Joanna Hutchinson and Josephine White, and many nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Fred’s life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4th at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 110 S Main St., Mount Holly, NC. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
