H.C. “Red” Lawing passed away peacefully on the morning of 6/20/19 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, daughters, son-in-law’s and grandchildren.  Laura Lawing Abernathy, her husband John, and son Jason; Linda Lawing Dilley, her husband Lindsay, and daughter Rachel, son Andrew, and daughter-in-law Johanna; Leigh Lawing Nance, her husband Michael, daughter Mary, and son Craig.  He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Emelda Lawing, and their daughters Amy and Allie Lawing; his sister-in-law Georgeanna Lawing, and her children Max Lawing Jr and his wife Margherita, Danny Lawing and Cathy Gilbert and her husband Danny; and his aunt, Thelma Pettus.  He was preceded in death by his parents Boyd and Mable Lawing, as well as his brothers Boyd (“Bud”) Lawing Jr., Max Lawing, and sister, Gladys Hunt.

Red recently turned 85 years old and lived in the Mt. Holly and Belmont area for most of his life.  He never met a stranger and was a friend to every golf course he ever visited.  His quick wit and humor were his calling card.  Almost everyone who ever met him had a “Red story.”  We are fortunate to have so many wonderful memories.

Red served in the United States Army and was a proud veteran of the Korean War.  His love of country and commitment to the service of others remained with him for his entire life.

Red was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Holly.  He was part of the congregation during many years of change and growth where he always respected and enjoyed the company of his pastors.

Additionally, our family would like to thank Dr. Harpreet Bhalla for his love and care.  His compassion, knowledge and commitment were greatly appreciated during this journey.

Red loved his family unconditionally.  He could be tough when needed, but that was not his preference.  He liked to talk, debate, and always enjoyed a lively political discussion.

Suzanne was Red’s soul mate.  After 61 years of marriage they still loved, supported, and adored each other.  They set a stellar example of love.

The family will hold a visitation from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on 6/25/19 in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Holly, NC (140 North Main Street).  Additionally, a Celebration of Life service will be held in the church sanctuary at 2:00 p.m. on 6/26/19.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Holly, NC.
