Mary Kathleen Mullis (Kathleen), a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished her
family, went to be with Jesus on Friday, January 31, 2025. Kathleen, who proudly said she was
101½, was born in Stokes County, NC, on June 13, 1923, to John Fletcher and Emma Sisk Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James Brooks Mullis, an infant son
James Brooks, Jr., four brothers, three sisters, and a great-granddaughter Maadiah Faulk. She
is survived by her daughter Jatana Bremer, son Donald Mullis (Pat), and her grandchildren:
Russell Faulk, Kelly Phillips (Joey), Heather Hutton (Tom), Amy Maggart (Donnie), and Donna
Schafer (Mark). Kathleen, affectionately called Granny Kat, was also blessed with seventeen
great-grandchildren and spouses, and four great-great-grandsons, as well as a multitude of
special nieces and nephews.
For quite a few years, Kathleen performed the intricate task of wiring small electrical panels--
first for missiles, then later for dental equipment. At one time, she co-owned a clothing store
with her sister Ruth; later in her retirement, she enjoyed working at Roses as well as caring
for plants at Metrolina Greenhouses. Some of her hobbies included simply being outdoors,
planting flowers, and hunting for antiques.
Kathleen’s greatest treasure was her Christian faith. She was a faithful member of Beth
Haven Baptist Church in Denver, NC, for almost forty years; she gained another church family
at Goodview Baptist upon moving to Virginia. Kathleen was known to say her nightly prayers
aloud, talking to her Savior and friend Jesus, and praying for loved ones by name; anyone
nearby was always blessed to hear them as well. As recently as the past few weeks, when
nurses and hospital staff were working in her room, Kathleen would ask them, “Do you know
Jesus?” Her wish was that each person whose path she crossed would have the same joy and
peace she had in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world, that he
gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
A memorial service will be held at Beth Haven Baptist Church (Denver, NC) on February 15,
