Larry “Jim” James Cope Obituary
We regretfully share the passing of Larry James "Jimmy" Cope, better known as Jim, who departed this life on March 26th, 2025. Born on December 12, 1946, Jim lived a fulfilled life that impacted many around him.
Jim had the privilege of stepping into retirement in 1999 after a long and productive career at Duke Energy. Not one to stay idle, he made an encore by joining Gaston Christian School as a project manager for several of the building projects and also served diligently as a board member.
As an alumnus of South Point High School, graduating in 1965, Jim carried the virtues of hard work, relentless pursuit of excellence, and service to others throughout his life. His commitment to his Lord and savior Jesus Christ was evident in his active participation as a member at Parkwood Baptist Church where he served as chairman of Deacons, worked with the Awanas, and taught Sunday School. He also served many years at Catawba Heights Baptist Church as Sunday School Director and Chairman of Deacons, and teacher while he was a member.
Jim was a skilled handyman and found great joy in fixing things, a hobby that brought him immense satisfaction. His delight in being of service to others was infectious and will be fondly remembered.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 1/2 years, Linda Cope, his daughter Kim Atkins and her husband Steve, and his son, Chris Cope and his wife Lynn. Jim's memory will also live on through his cherished grandchildren Chelsea Mauney, Brianna Cope, and Ryan Cope. He was predeceased by his siblings Leila Eller and Judy Cope, and his parents John and Mavin Cope. The family would like to offer special thanks to Kim Atkins, Chris Cope, Peak Resources - Cherryville staff and caregivers and Emily of Carolina Caring - Hospice.
A funeral service will be held in his memory on April 1, 2025, at Parkwood Baptist Church at 11:30 AM. This will be followed by a burial at Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 10:00-11:15am.
Memorials may be made to Parkwood Baptist Church.
Linda wanted to express a special thanks to Kim Atkins, Chris Cope, Peak Resources in Cherryville and Emily of Carolina Caring (Hospice).
