Melvin Monroe "Pete" Whitesides Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, at Peak Resources Gastonia, at the age of 70. Born on June 6, 1954, in Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, Melvin lived a life filled with love, service, and unwavering dedication to his family.


Pete was the cherished son of the late Martha and Melvin Whitesides. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 48 years, Cathy Whitesides, his brother Michael Whitesides, and his sister Dana Gardner.


He is survived by his two sons, Petey Whitesides and his wife Erika, and Max Whitesides and his wife Brittany, who carry forward his legacy with pride. Pete was also a proud grandfather to his grandchildren, Whitney, Will, and Allie Whitesides, who brought immense joy to his life. He is further survived by his loving sisters, Carol Vinson and Lori Bingham, and his brothers-in-law, Mike Vinson and Kim Gardner, who will always remember him.


A graduate of Mount Holly High School in 1972, Pete’s early years were marked by a deep love for basketball, a sport he enjoyed playing passionately. He was a huge fan of NC State, cheering for his team with unwavering enthusiasm. He also had a simple pleasure in cutting grass, finding satisfaction in the beauty of a well-kept yard. He had a passion for playing golf and loved spending time of the golf course.


Professionally, Pete dedicated many years of his life to the service of others through his work at Milner Airco and Parks Heating and Cooling, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to quality service. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Pete served his country with honor and integrity, a testament to his character and commitment.


Pete was a long-time member of Grace Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and served as a Deacon. More recently, he was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
