Butch was the son of the late Murray and Martha Bumgardner Washam. He was a proud graduate of North Mecklenburg High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Army, a commitment that he held dear throughout his life. After his military service, Butch dedicated 40 years to the McGuire Nuclear Plant for Duke Power, where he was known for his strong work ethic and unwavering loyalty.
In 1976, Butch married the love of his life, Roxanne Washam, with whom he shared a beautiful journey for 49 years. Butch's heart was as big as his passions. He loved to go bass fishing and competed in numerous tournaments, always relishing the thrill of the catch. In addition to fishing, he had a zest for life that included riding motorcycles and enjoying the open road.
