Richard Anthony Rooney, of Matthews NC, died on Friday, January 11, 2021. A native of Brooklyn, NY, he leaves behind his beloved wife Patricia O’Hagan Rooney and his cherished daughter Brenda Marie Rooney. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers Peter, William and Thomas and a sister Mary Ann. He is survived by his siblings Marcella Mitchell (Richard), James Rooney (Cathlyn), Margaret Alwon (Kenneth), and Bernard Rooney, 17 nieces and nephews, 35 great nieces and nephews, and 2 great great nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Knights of Columbus. He loved God, the Church and all things Irish. He also loved books, poetry, history, and fishing. Richard personified a successful life by being naturally kind. He was always ready to help others. Richard had run the Meals on Wheels (Friendship Trays) for many years at St. Luke Church. He also picked up our homeless neighbors for Room in the Inn. He would cook breakfast for them before taking them back to the Urban Ministry Center. He was an Usher at Sunday Mass and was a member of the Young at Heart Group. With a beautiful smile and a powerful voice, as a younger man he would often entertain his friends and family with Irish Songs, one of which included the phrase “for his heart was like a mountain, and his honor you could not buy.” That about sums it up for this wonderful husband, father, brother, friend, companion and all around gentle man. His memory will long endure!
