Roy Richard Abernathy, born on April 20, 1946, in Charlotte, North Carolina, peacefully passed away at his home on August 23, 2025, at the age of 79. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather,great grandfather and friend.

Roy was the cherished son of the late Horis and Inez Abernathy. He was preceded in death by his  daughter, Debbie Abernathy. Roy’s family was the center of his universe, and he is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Sarah Rankin Abernathy, who stood by his side through all of life’s journeys. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and unwavering support.

Roy's legacy continues through his children, including his daughter Mary Ellen and son-in-law Charles Mulvaney, and his son Roy Richard Abernathy, who is married to his wonderful wife Erica. The joy of his life was further amplified by his grandchildren: Deann Hedrick and her spouse Eric, Justin Mulvaney and his spouse Alexis, Alec Mulvaney and his spouse Callie, as well as Christopher Smith and Erik Smith, Great grandchildren Joey Hedrick, Gracie Hedrick and Isabella Mulvaney. Each grandchild held a special place in Roy's heart, and he took great pride in their accomplishments and lives.

Throughout his life, Roy was known for his unwavering work ethic and dedication as a lifelong truck driver. He navigated the highways with the same care and pride he took in his family. A proud supporter of the Carolina Panthers, he enjoyed cheering on his favorite team, bringing joy and enthusiasm to all who watched the games with him.

Roy was not only a devoted family man but also an active member of his community. He served as a former member of the Lucia Riverbend Fire Department and the East Lincoln Rescue, where he made lasting friendships and contributed to the safety and well-being of his neighbors. His commitment to helping others was a testament to his character and the love he had for his community.

Roy's family and friends will gather to celebrate his life on September 6, 2025, at 5:00 PM at the First Methodist Church. The family will receive friends form 4-5:00pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Tyler Herndon Foundation or the Bradley Long Memorial Fund, causes that reflect Roy’s generous spirit and dedication to helping others.
