Sarah Rankin Abernathy, born on February 17, 1954, in Charlotte, North Carolina, peacefully passed away at her home on November 21, 2025, at the age of 71. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother,great grandmother and friend.
Sarah was the cherished daughter of the late James Edgar Rankin and Mary Ferguson Rankin. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy R. Abernathy, her daughter, Debbie Abernathy. Sarah’s family was the center of her universe. Sarah's legacy continues through her children, including her daughter Mary Ellen and son-in-law Charles Mulvaney, and her son Roy Richard Abernathy, who is married to his wonderful wife Erica, her brother James Rankin and wife Lynette Rankin.The joy of her life was further amplified by her grandchildren: Deann Hedrick and her spouse Eric, Justin Mulvaney and his spouse Alexis, Alec Mulvaney and his spouse Callie, as well as Christopher Smith and Erik Smith, Great grandchildren Joey Hedrick, Gracie Hedrick and Isabella Mulvaney. Each grandchild held a special place in Sarah's heart, and she took great pride in their accomplishments and lives.
Sarah loved her family with all her heart. She was always there whenever you needed her. She was an active member of her community. She served as a former member of the Mount Holly Life Saving Crew until they closed, and also a member of the East Lincoln Rescue Squad for over 10 years. Her commitment to helping others was a testament to her character and the love she had for her community.
Sarah's family and friends will gather to celebrate her life on December 7, 2025, at 4:30 PM at the First Methodist Church. The family will receive friends form 3:30-4:30pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Tyler Herndon Foundation.
