William Joseph Roper, Jr., 76, of Mt. Holly, NC, passed away at the Robin Johnson Hospice House on
September 24, 2023 after his battle against liver cancer.
Joe was known by many names: Big Joe, Ram, and others. Joe grew up in Belmont/Mt. Holly, a town he
loved and never left. Joe attended Hargrove Military Academy for his Junior and Senior years in
Chatham, VA. He was First Lieutenant over his platoon. He was in chorus and played football during his
years at Hargrove. Joe enjoyed his younger years spending time with Don Bumgarner on the farm,
cowboying, and horse riding. He loved Love Valley and held his time there as one of his most cherished
memories. Joe’s best friend was his favorite horse, Abe. Joe’s other love was spending time with his
family.
Joe was predeceased by his father, William Roper, his brother, Lee Roper, and his sons: Jody Roper and
Trey McCants. He is survived by his wife, Deborah Roper; children: Michael Roper, Mandy Mitchell,
Morgan McCants; children-in-law: Belinda Roper, John Mitchell; grandchildren: Cody Mitchell, Sydney
Mitchell, Wyatt Roper, Seth Roper, Elaina Roper, Breanna Roper; mother, Nancy Roper; sister, Beth
Roper; nieces and nephew: Charlotte Miles, Lynise Roper, Noah Roper; great-niece and nephews: Josie
Roper, Logan Roper, Bradley Roper.
Joe requested a celebration of life be held in his honor as opposed to traditional funeral services. We
request all of Joe’s loved ones to join us in celebrating his beautiful life at First United Methodist Church
in Mt. Holly, NC on November 7, 2023 at 3:00. The family will receive family and friends at 2:00 at the church.
