Willie Bert Rhyne, 100, of 208 Walnut Avenue passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 20, 2021.
He was born in Gaston County, son of the late Willie and Winnie Rhyne. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Johnson Rhyne of 70 years and a son Edward Rhyne.
He was born and raised on Mount Holly Huntersville Highway. He was a life member of the First United Methodist Church. He was US Navy WWII Veteran from 1941-1945 where he served on the USS O’Bannon as a machinist. It was the most highly decorated warship in the pacific. He retired as a machinist from Duke Power Riverbend Steam Plant after 43 years. He was a member of the Gaston County Last Man’s Club. He was a former member of the Mount Holly VFW #6724. He was a volunteer for the Charlotte Red Cross Donation Center where he donated over 27 gallons of blood. He loved God and his Country,
He is survived by his son Willie Efird "Buddy" Rhyne and wife Barbara of McDonough, Georgia, one granddaughter Melanie Rhyne Harte and husband Mike of Mount Holly, and two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Jessica Harte.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Rhyne will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 30, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church of Mount Holly with Reverend Mike Carr and Reverend Jerrianne Pyles officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00-1:00pm prior to the service at at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the First United Methodist Church 140 North Main Street, Mount Holly, NC 28120, or to the Mount Holly CRO PO Box 831, Mount Holly, NC 28120.
